A LETTER FROM A READER

THE CARDIGAN I REACH FOR THE MOMENT I FEEL A CHILL.

On the Grace — the button-front knit that falls straight, slips off in a second, and happens to be the most complimented thing I own.

The Grace pastel plaid cardigan worn buttoned on a sunny porch
The Grace — sage green, dusty pink and cream, in a soft pastel plaid you want to live in.

I am 64 years old, and getting dressed had quietly become a daily guessing game with the thermostat. Too warm in a sweater, too bare in a blouse — I spent most mornings settling for whatever was least uncomfortable.

It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

Then a woman in my garden club here in Charleston kept turning up in the same pastel plaid cardigan, looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read June & Louise's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1OFF IN A SECOND, BACK ON JUST AS FAST.

The Grace cardigan at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee
At the kitchen table, coffee in hand — buttoned up, or off in a second when the room warms.

We made the Grace button-through from collar to hem so that when the room warms up — at dinner, at church, in the middle of a conversation — you can slip it off your shoulders in one easy movement and carry on. Nothing pulled over your head. Nothing mussed. The room does not notice, and neither do you.

★★★★★ I bought this for those days when the house is chilly but a regular sweater feels like too much. The soft colors are even prettier in person, and I love that I can button it up and wear it like a shirt. I've worn it to lunch with friends twice already, and both times someone asked where I got it.Margaret H. — Franklin, TN

2TWO STRAIGHT LINES FROM SHOULDER TO HEM.

We cut the Grace so the two front panels fall in a straight vertical line from shoulder to hem — no flaring, no pulling open at the chest. There is enough room in the body that the edges never curl away from each other, and they never grip. It skims the middle rather than calling attention to it. That is a deliberate choice in every pattern piece.

★★★★★ At 62, comfort is important to me, but I don't want to feel like I've just thrown on any old cardigan. This one has a lovely shape, and the sage green and dusty pink look beautiful together. The sleeves are long enough, and the front lies nicely instead of hanging open awkwardly.Susan B. — Asheville, NC

3ARMS IN, AND YOU ARE WEARING IT.

The button placket and the collar, up close.

We designed the Grace to open all the way to the collar, with a clean button placket that parts easily and closes without fuss. Slip your arms in like a coat, do up a few buttons, and you are done — no pulling over your hair, no catching at the shoulders, no wrestling with a neck opening. We think of it as the design the cardigan always should have had.

★★★★★ This is such an easy piece to style. I wear it buttoned with jeans and loafers, and it looks like I put much more effort into my outfit than I actually did. The plaid is subtle enough to pair with things I already own. Definitely the kind of piece I reach for when the weather can't make up its mind.Patricia W. — Scottsdale, AZ

4THE SLEEVELESS DRESS YOU STOPPED WEARING BECOMES WEARABLE AGAIN.

The ribbed cuffs, up close — the coverage that makes the rest of your closet wearable again.

We gave the Grace long sleeves that come right down to a neat ribbed cuff at the wrist — the exact coverage that turns a bare-armed dress or blouse into a complete outfit. Think of it as the key to the rest of your closet: the linen shift you like but never wear, the sleeveless dress that has sat untouched all spring. One Grace over the top, and those pieces are yours again.

★★★★★ The button-front design is what sold me. I can put it on and take it off without messing up my hair, which sounds like a small thing but matters when you're getting ready in a hurry! The knit feels comfortable, and the ribbed cuffs give the sleeves a neat finish. It's practical without looking plain.Linda C. — Columbus, OH

5NOTHING ABOUT IT READS CARDIGAN IN THE OLD SENSE.

The Grace cardigan worn by a bright window, reaching for a book
At the window — a collar and a plaid that read like a shirt, not a cardigan.

We chose the pastel plaid — large soft blocks of sage green, dusty pink and cream — because it reads as a shirt, not a grandmotherly layer. The collar helps. So does the button-through front and the clean ribbed hem. The old image of the shapeless cardigan exists; the Grace simply does not fit it. Women ask about it. That was the intention.

★★★★★ I was a little hesitant about ordering knitwear online, especially something with a light-colored plaid. I really like how the cream, pink, and green work together. It feels classic but not dated, and the straight shape is flattering without being tight. I can see myself wearing this for years.Carolyn M. — Madison, WI

6THE FRONT HANGS THE SAME IN OCTOBER AS IN MARCH.

We reinforced the button placket on the Grace so the front edge does not stretch and sag over time — the thing that slowly ruins most cardigans. An open-front knit pulls itself down with every wear if the edge is not built for it. Ours is. The two panels hang where we put them, month after month.

★★★★★ I'm always cold in restaurants and stores, even when everyone else seems perfectly comfortable. This cardigan is just what I needed. I love being able to button it all the way up, and it looks polished enough for dinner instead of feeling like an extra layer I grabbed on the way out. The pastel plaid makes it feel a little special, too.Deborah R. — Charleston, SC

WHY THEY'RE CLEARING IT NOW

They priced the Grace at $199.95, and it became their bestseller this fall at that price. But June & Louise turn 25 this year, and the women behind the shop wanted to give something back — so every cardigan is going out at less than a third of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later, folded in a June & Louise Charleston bag. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many mornings feeling too warm, then too cold, then settled for dull — and this one cardigan quietly solved all three at once. If you recognize that feeling, I hope you find your size before it clears.
