THE ONE SWEATER I PULL ON AND INSTANTLY LOOK LIKE MYSELF AGAIN.

I am 64 years old, and on cold mornings getting dressed had quietly become a daily negotiation. Everything warm clung across the middle or hung like a sack; everything pretty gripped at my throat before I had finished my coffee. So most mornings I gave up and reached for the same tired cardigan.

The thick folded collar rests around the neck the way a scarf does — the part most turtlenecks grab at by mid-morning — in a soft double layer that keeps the warmth in. Warm without reaching for a scarf, and comfortable even on a cold morning.

The gray is a classic medium gray done with a gentle hand — not pale, not charcoal, a choice rather than a default next to silver hair and a strand of pearls. Nothing loud, nothing washed-out — the kind of gray that goes with your denim, your black pants and the camel coat by the door.

We make the Kathleen from a size S all the way to 3XL and cut it relaxed on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweater.

They priced the Kathleen at $216.50, and it became their bestseller this fall at that price. But June & Louise turn 25 this year, and the women behind the shop wanted to give something back — so every sweater is going out at less than a third of that.

I ordered mine that evening, in Gray. It arrived a few days later, folded in tissue in a kraft box with a June & Louise Charleston card inside. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.
