A STYLE LETTER FROM CHARLESTON — JUNE & LOUISE

AT 64, I’M DONE WITH SWEATERS THAT FEEL TOO TIGHT OR LOOK TOO BULKY. THESE PONCHO SWEATERS CAUGHT MY EYE.

Six little things I appreciate about these relaxed poncho sweaters, and why simple clothes can still look lovely.

I’m 64, and these days I want my clothes to be comfortable without making me feel sloppy. I still like looking nice, of course. I just don’t have the patience for tight sleeves, stiff sweaters, or constantly adjusting what I’m wearing.

That’s what caught my attention about the Poncho Sweaters Collection at June & Louise. The shape is relaxed, the sleeves are roomy, and there’s something lovely about the simple knitted design.

I’ve always preferred clothes I can wear with my favorite jeans. Nothing complicated. Just something that looks nice when I head out for coffee or spend a quiet afternoon at home.

Here are six little details I particularly like about these ponchos.

“I don’t need a whole new wardrobe. I just want a few good pieces that make getting dressed easier.”

THE RELAXED FIT IS WHAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION

I love the way this black poncho hangs without looking stiff or fitted. There’s plenty of room through the body, and the wider sleeves give it such an easy shape. With jeans and a simple white top underneath, it makes a lovely casual outfit.

I like a little breathing room in my clothes, and I don't want to be fussing with a sweater all afternoon. The Ella taupe poncho leaves me alone. Saturday I sat through my grandson's whole ball game without once tugging a sleeve or hitching a shoulder back up. Hands in the front pocket, jeans underneath. That's all I ask of a sweater.

I LOVE THE SIMPLE KNITTED DETAILS

Look at the ribbed edges, the hood, and those little drawstrings. Nothing flashy, just a nice knitted texture and thoughtful details. The charcoal color is particularly easy to imagine wearing with things already in my closet.

A hood with drawstrings? I pictured a teenager's sweatshirt and nearly passed. But on the Margaux green poncho those details are knitted, not sporty: ribbed edges, a soft hood, two little cords. My neighbor asked about it at the mailbox. Sometimes the simplest details are the nicest. I don't need anything fancy to feel put together.

THE WIDE SLEEVES ARE SUCH A NICE CHANGE

I’m tired of sweaters with narrow sleeves that feel awkward when I move my arms. These ponchos have a much roomier shape. And I especially like how the red one looks with a white top and ordinary blue jeans. It’s cheerful without trying too hard.

At 68, comfort matters. But I still want to look like I've made an effort. Red felt bold for me, and wide sleeves sounded like a bathrobe. The Claire red poncho proved me wrong on both. The sleeves don't bind when I'm holding a hymnal, and the ribbed trim keeps it looking finished. Sunday two ladies in my pew said the red suited me. Nobody said it looked comfortable. I'll take that.

IT’S THE SORT OF THING I’D WEAR ON AN ORDINARY MORNING

You know those mornings when you’re having coffee, reading a book, and not doing anything particularly exciting? That’s exactly when I like an easy sweater. This blue one looks lovely with jeans, and the color brings a little brightness to a quiet day.

I figured a pretty blue sweater would hang in the closet waiting for an occasion. Instead the Amelie blue poncho became the thing I reach for when I'm not going anywhere special. Thursday it rained, so I pulled it on over leggings, made coffee, and read on the couch until the chapter ended. The blue was the brightest thing in the room. Nothing special happened, and that's exactly why I love it.

THERE ARE COLORS FOR DIFFERENT MOODS

Navy and taupe are always useful, but I rather like this purple too. It’s a pretty color without being too bright. I can picture wearing it with jeans for lunch, a little shopping, or a walk along the Battery.

The purple poncho adds a gentle pop of color to an easy everyday outfit.

For forty years my closet was navy, gray, and more navy. Office colors, and I've worn enough of them. Now that I'm retired, I ordered the Elodie purple poncho on a whim, because sometimes I like something a little prettier. It's a soft purple, not a loud one. My daughter took me to lunch Tuesday, and the first thing she noticed was the purple. Nobody ever said a word about my navy.

A SIMPLE SWEATER CAN STILL FEEL LIKE A LITTLE TREAT

There’s something lovely about receiving a new piece of clothing, especially one you can imagine wearing with so many things. This white poncho has that clean, classic look I always appreciate. Add jeans and a little jewelry, and you’re ready for the day.

I've always liked simple clothes. The package came Friday, and I laid the Janice white poncho out on the bed before I tried it on. White knit, a hood, ribbed edges, nothing more. The next morning it went to the beach with me, jeans rolled up, October wind and all, and I stayed longer than I'd planned. A nice sweater doesn't need to be complicated to make you happy.

THESE PONCHOS, COMPARED WITH AN ORDINARY FITTED SWEATER

I still own ordinary sweaters, and there’s nothing wrong with them. But sometimes I just want something with a little more room and an easier shape.

Ordinary fitted sweaters

Close-fitting sleeves

More defined waist and body shape

Traditional sweater silhouette

Often needs careful sizing for a relaxed look

Simple everyday styling

Poncho Sweaters Collection

Relaxed, roomy shape

Ribbed trim and multiple colors

A LITTLE NOTE ABOUT THE PRICE

I still pay attention to prices. Just because something looks lovely doesn’t mean I want to spend a fortune on it.

The advertised offer for these Poncho Sweaters is $59.95, compared with a listed price of $199.95 — about 70% off during the 25th Anniversary Sale. I always think it’s worth looking at the colors and checking the sizes before deciding.

A sale is nice, but finding something you’ll actually enjoy wearing is what matters most.

I suppose my point is simple. Getting older doesn’t mean we have to stop enjoying pretty clothes. We can choose comfort and still look nice.

If you like relaxed sweaters, have a look at the colors. You might find one that goes with the jeans you already love.

Warm wishes from Charleston,
