A LETTER FROM A READER

THE DENIM DRESS THAT RETIRED MY FLEECE.

On the Zephyrelle — real washed denim like your favorite jeans, gathered high so nothing digs in, with two deep pockets. The first dress I have owned since the day I started driving.

The Zephyrelle denim maxi dress in Blue worn on a Charleston porch, hands in the pockets
The Zephyrelle in Blue — on my own porch, hands in the pockets, and not a fleece in sight.

I am 64. For twenty-six years I drove Bus 7 for the school district — out the door at 5:45, in rain pants, a fleece, and boots that could survive anything. At my retirement party in June, one of my old kids stood up and said, “We all love Mrs. P. But in twenty-six years, not one of us has ever seen her out of that fleece.” The whole room laughed. So did I. When someone asked what I would wear now, I said what I had said for years: oh, I'm a fleece person.

Here is what I did not say at the party: somewhere in those twenty-six winters, the woman who liked nice things — the green skirt, the earrings — went quiet, and I did not notice her going.

The first cold front blew in and I ducked out of the rain into a boutique on King Street, a lamp lit in the corner. A voice from behind the counter: “Mrs. P? Bus 7?” It was Hannah — six years on my bus, violin case in her lap, now grown and working at June & Louise. She took a long denim dress off the rack, held it against me: “You waited for me every morning for six years. Now it's my turn. Go try this on.” I did. Then she handed me their letter about it, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1REAL DENIM, LIKE YOUR FAVORITE JEANS.

Close-up of the washed blue denim, the contrast stitching and a hand in the side pocket of the Zephyrelle dress
Up close: the washed blue denim, the contrast stitching, and the soft gathering that stands in for a waistband.

We cut the Zephyrelle from real denim in a deep washed blue — and three more colors — with the stitching showing on the outside the way it does on jeans you have worn for years. It is lightweight denim, not the stiff kind, so it drapes and moves with you instead of standing on its own.

★★★★★ I've worn jeans every day since 1979. Horses will do that to you. This is the only dress that feels like them. It's washed soft, and it swings when I walk instead of standing stiff around me. I kept catching myself in the hall mirror and didn't mind what I saw. I'm ordering the navy one next.Rhonda L. — Lexington, KY

2NO WAISTBAND. NOTHING DIGS IN.

We gathered it softly, high under the bust, and let the skirt fall loose all the way down. No waistband, no belt — nothing digs in when you sit, nothing pulls across the middle. It skims instead of clings: shape without the squeeze.

★★★★★ I'm 66, and I carry my weight in the middle now. I wore the blue one to my nephew's outdoor wedding last Saturday. Ceremony, dinner, toasts, four hours in a folding chair. Nothing pinched, and I never once reached under the table to loosen anything. I stood up for the first dance without that little tug at the waist we all do. I'd forgotten what that felt like.Patricia K. — Springfield, MO

3TWO DEEP POCKETS. REAL ONES.

Out with the dog in flats — both hands in the pockets, leash and all.

And then there are the pockets. Two real ones, set into the side seams — not patched onto the front — deep enough for keys, a phone, or both hands on the morning walk. Put your hands in and that is the end of the argument: shoulders down, entirely at ease.

★★★★★ My husband always held my hand at parties. At a neighbor's birthday party last month, my first without him, I didn't know what to do with my hands. I put them in the pockets of this dress, phone and keys already in there, and stood up straight. Nobody could tell a thing. That was enough for one evening.Janet F. — Lancaster, PA

4LONG SLEEVES, BUTTONED AT THE CUFF.

The cuff closes with a real button — a detail nobody ever put on my fleece.

We gave it long sleeves with a cuff that buttons — arms covered on a cold morning, cuff undone and pushed up when the kitchen gets warm. Over wool tights, with boots and a cardigan, it is a dress for the cold days. With flats, it is a dress for spring. One dress, every season.

★★★★★ Thirty-one years in scrubs, and I hung them up in August. Last Tuesday was cold enough for tights and boots, so I put this on and drove to my daughter's for coffee instead of to the hospital. She reached across the table and buttoned the cuff I'd missed, the way I used to button her coat. I had to look out the window for a minute.Cheryl D. — Duluth, MN

5FOUR COLORS, MACHINE WASHABLE.

The Zephyrelle dress in all four colors, blue, white, black and navy, laid out on linen
All four colors laid out on linen: Blue, White, Black, and Navy.

We make it in four colors: Blue, the classic; Navy and Black for the quieter, darker months; White for the first bright days of spring. Whichever you choose, it goes in the machine with everything else.

★★★★★ I picked the white, a color I hadn't let myself wear since my own children were small, and at fifty-four I decided that was long enough. Of course my granddaughter climbed into my lap with jam on both hands before I'd had it on an hour. I ran it through the washer that night and it came out fine. Sunday it went to church with me.Brenda T. — Tucson, AZ

6IT FITS THE WOMAN — OR IT GOES BACK.

We make the Zephyrelle in six sizes, S to 3XL, with a size chart for bust, waist, hips, and length, so you measure instead of guessing. The cut is relaxed and forgiving, though the middle sizes are always the first to go. And every order comes with our easy 30-day return: if the fit is off, sending it back is simple.

★★★★★ Dresses don't come in a 2XL. That's what I'd told myself for years. I measured like the chart said and ordered the 2XL it pointed to. It fit the body I have now, not the one in the old photos. Room through the hips, nothing tight in the arms. My son took a picture for the family group text, and for once I didn't ask him to delete it.Tammy J. — Savannah, GA

WHY THEY'RE CLEARING IT NOW

They priced the Zephyrelle at $216.95, and it became their bestseller this fall at that price. But June & Louise turn 25 this year, and the women behind the shop wanted to give something back — so every dress is going out at less than a third of that.

My first thought was: don't be ridiculous, Eliza, you drove a school bus — and with that much denim at that price, there had to be a catch. Hannah did not give me time to find one: she had me order mine on the website right there by the lamp, before I could talk myself out of it. It arrived four days later, folded in tissue in a kraft box with a June & Louise Charleston card inside. It hangs at the front of my closet now, right where the fleece used to.

I do not usually write things like this. But I will be honest: I paused at the price before I ordered. Then I remembered that speech. The Saturday after it arrived was book club — seven women who know me only in fleece. I took off my coat and the room went silent, until my friend Carol set down her wine glass: “Eliza. Are you wearing a dress?” My husband, at the foot of the stairs: “Who are you, and what have you done with my wife?” I was never a fleece person. I was just at work. If your closet is only the things you wore to get through the years, I hope you find your size before it clears.
